A Decade of Glory

Celebrating 10 Years Since the Townsville Fire’s First WNBL Championship
In the rich tapestry of Australian basketball history, March 2015 will forever be etched in golden letters for the Townsville Fire. It was a moment that transcended sport, a moment that united a city, and a moment that marked the beginning of an era. This Saturday, we celebrate 10 years since the Fire clinched their very first WNBL Championship, igniting a legacy that continues to burn brightly.
The Road to Glory
The 2014/15 WNBL season was a story of resilience, determination, and belief for the Fire. Under the leadership of head coach Chris Lucas, the team had unfinished business after falling short in the Grand Final the previous year. With a roster boasting the likes of MVP Suzy Batkovic, sharpshooter Steph Cumming, and the dynamic Mia Murray (nee Newley), the Fire were a formidable force.
The Fire’s journey to the title was anything but easy. Battling fierce competition from perennial contenders like the Bendigo Spirit and the Sydney Uni Flames, the team demonstrated their grit and unity. Their march to the finals showcased their signature blend of tenacious defence, clinical execution, and an unrelenting will to win.
The Grand Final Triumph
On March 8, 2015, the Fire hosted the Bendigo Spirit at a packed Townsville RSL Stadium in what would become an unforgettable Grand Final showdown. With the weight of expectation on their shoulders, the Fire delivered a performance for the ages. Suzy Batkovic was at her dominant best, while Steph Cumming’s precision shooting kept the scoreboard ticking, but it was Mia Murray (nee Newley) who led the way on the day with (23 points, 3-5 three point shooting) earning herself the very well deserved Finals MVP
The final buzzer saw the Fire emerge victorious, 75-65, and Townsville erupted in celebration. It was more than a championship; it was a defining moment for the city and the team. Fans flooded the court, players embraced with tears of joy, and the WNBL trophy found its new home in Townsville.
A Legacy Forged
That first championship was the spark that lit the Fire dynasty. It marked the start of a golden period for the club, with the team going on to claim three more championships in 2016,2018, and 2023. Each triumph built on the foundations laid in 2015, with a commitment to excellence and a deep connection to the Townsville community.
The Fire’s achievements over the past decade have been driven by a mix of world-class talent, dedicated staff, board directors, volunteers and passionate supporters. The “Fire Pit” has become a fortress, with fans creating an electric atmosphere that inspires the players.
Looking Back, Moving Forward
As we reflect on that historic day in 2015, it’s impossible not to marvel at how far the Townsville Fire has come. From their humble beginnings to becoming one of the most successful and beloved teams in the WNBL, the journey has been extraordinary.
The anniversary serves as a reminder of the power of sport to bring people together, to inspire, and to create lasting memories. It’s also an opportunity to celebrate the players, coaches, and fans who have been part of this incredible journey.
