A win for Christmas
Super Steph Explodes Against Perth
Steph Reid left the Lynx chasing her shadow at the Fire Pit. She top scored with a career high 27 points and led the assists count with 9. The point guard also finished with a game high 4 steals, and one of the smallest players in the league dragged down six rebounds. Her sore shoulder seemingly ok according to those numbers… And the woman herself.
“It feels good yeah can’t complain. “
It was strapped up and Reid required more treatment than usual in the lead up to the game. Townsville coach Shannon Seebohm hoped she’d be able to contribute in some manner, his expectations were well beyond exceeded.
“She was great. Obviously on our road trip she got banged up pretty bad with her shoulder and back and then had some issues with it during the week at training. But that’s one thing I think you know about Steph is that when it’s game time she’s going to turn up, injured or healthy it doesn’t matter, she’s going to give us everything she’s got, and she was fantastic.”
Reid revealed Seebohm wasn’t feeling fantastic at half time despite the hosts holding 51-44 lead.
“Yeah we did a really good job offensively but we hang our hat on defence and to let a team score 44 points is just not really good enough by our standards and yeah Shannon came in and definitely emphasized it too.”
His spray did the trick. Our women doubled Perth’s points tally in the third quarter, effectively ending the contest.
“To the girls credit I thought they responded really well out of the locker room, which you know hasn’t been our strength this season. A couple of times little poor patches just after half time have cost us so I was really proud we held them to 12 points.”
The starters earned early marks in the final period, particularly Tianna Hawkins who posted 20 points and collected 15 boards. Recent signing Kate Gaze got a few minutes of court time and her first basket of stint number three with the club. The Fire fell just short of triple figures in a 98-85 victory.
The players will enjoy a few days off over Christmas before returning to action against Melbourne on New Years Eve, at the Fire Pit. Tickets for the clash are available and watching what should be an epic battle between two top four teams, would be an exciting start to a night of celebrations.
