Adelaide strike in Townsville
The JCU Townsville Fire have slumped to back-to-back defeats after being outgunned by Adelaide.
With inspirational captain Suzy Batkovic ruled out on game day with a neck injury, the Fire fought bravely against the Lightning, but ultimately fell short 70-85.
Acting captain Micaela Cocks was named the First Things First MVP after scoring a team-high 17 points to go with two assists and two steals.
The triple championship winner was one of four players in double figures, with Ally Malott (14 points and four rebounds), Zitina Aokuso (12 points and nine rebounds) and Darcee Garbin (12 points and six rebounds) all contributors in the 15-point loss.
Having twice accounted for the Lightning this season, third time proved the charm for Chris Lucas as they made his former team pay on the offensive glass.
The Lightning pulled in a staggering 23 offensive rebounds which proved the difference in the overall scheme of things.
During a blistering start to the encounter, the Fire led 8-4 early in proceedings as Garbin went to work in the paint.
The Lightning counter-punched, however, as they went on an 18-3 run to open up a double digit lead.
A late flurry from cocks, including her first triple, reduced the margin to 18-24 at the first change.
The Lightning again rallied at the start of the second and threatened to blow the game wide open before the Fire finally found their feet.
Aokuso was causing issues in the paint, while Stella Beck got subbed in and made an immediate impact with four quick points.
With the Fire in the bonus, they were able to slash the lead to 38-41 at the main change and had all the momentum.
But after half-time, the Lightning proved too good as Lauren Nicholson (23 points), Nicole Seekamp (17 points) and Penina Davidson (14 points) took full toll.
Having slumped to a 5-7 record, the Fire can ill afford any further hiccups before Christmas with the team back at home next Friday when they host Perth.
