Australia overpowers Argentina

September 23, 2018 | Townsville Fire news

Australia has maintained their unbeaten start at the 2018 FIBA World Cup in Spain after overpowering Argentina last night.

With JCU Townsville Fire star Tess Madgen again impressive – the boom recruit finished with two points, five rebounds and four assists – the Chemist Warehouse Opals proved too strong for the South Americans as they secured an 84-43 victory.

With Nigeria upsetting Turkey in the other pool games, the Opals are now in the box seat to advance directly to the quarter-finals as their group’s top seed.

Having been caught in an arm wrestle against Nigeria just 24 hours earlier, the Opals had no such problem against Argentina as Liz Cambage rattled home the first 10 points of the game to open up a double-digit cushion.

Cambage again top-scored with 24 points and six rebounds, while Sami Whitcomb (16 points), Ezi Magbegor (14 points) and Alanna Smith (10 points) all played key roles.

The Opals now enjoy a rest day before tacking Turkey in their third and final pool game tomorrow night from 8.30pm.

FOX SPORTS Australia will broadcast all Australian games live and exclusive.
