Batkovic in seventh heaven

January 15, 2018 | Townsville Fire news

JCU Townsville Fire captain Suzy Batkovic has secured her seventh selection in the WNBL All*Star Five after another dominant season.

The five-time WNBL MVP, who remains one of the favourites to secure an historic sixth gong, was earlier today named for a third straight season.

The selection takes her to equal second on the all-time list alongside Kristi Harrower, Shelley Sandie and Michele Timms and just one adrift of Rachael Sporn, who sits alone with eight.

During the 2017/18 WNBL season, Batkovic averaged 20.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 1.1 blocks to sit inside the top-10 in all four categories.

The 37-year-old was named inside the All*Star team alongside Perth guards Courtney Williams and Sami Whitcomb, Sydney Uni forward Asia Taylor and Melbourne centre Liz Cambage.

“It’s always pleasing to be named to an All*Star Five team,” Batkovic said.

“To be siting alongside the likes of Kristi Harrower, Shelley Sandie and Michele Timms – and close to Rachael Sporn – is a real honour.

“Pleasingly, we’re still in contention to win another title, and that’s why I play the game, so hopefully we can close that out on Thursday night.”

The Boomers host the Fire in game two of the WNBL Grand Final series from 6.30pm (QLD time) on Thursday night and will be broadcast live and exclusive on Fox Sports.

The Fire is encouraging fans and members to watch the game at Townsville RSL.

The JCU Townsville Fire congratulate Suzy Batkovic on her latest WNBL All*Star Five selection.
