Captains announced

December 3, 2021 | Townsville Fire news

A three time WNBL champion and a Australian international will lead the Fire into battle this season with Townsville coach Shannon Seebohm selecting co-captains. Club stalwart Mia Murray and one of the superstar players in the league, Lauren Nicholson, will share the responsibilities. In accepting the position, Murray reflected on some of her past captains.

“I’m very excited very honoured you know this club has been in existence for 21 years and there has been some amazing captain’s go before me.”

Nicholson made a monumental impact in her inaugural season with Townsville, displaying inspiring attributes, driving the team during games. Given those traits it’s no surprise she now has the C next to her name. The guard says she’s excited by the dual captaincy concept.

“Yeah it’s a really big achievement and to stand beside Mia someone of her calibre it’s pretty special.”

Both women have different characteristics as individuals and a potential perfect partnership is in the making, with their qualities combined. Murray hopes they’ll be lifting the trophy together in April.

“I’ve been in the team near on 10 years now and I’ve gone the distance three times, I’ve got that championship experience to show the girls what it takes to get through a season and take the thing out. Lauren she just makes any team she plays on better, and she’s got that intensity about her on the court as well.”

The co-captains will begin their reign away from home, against Adelaide, a team they’ve both previously played for. Nicholson knows Townsville will be up for the clash.

“It’s an exciting time for us leading into round one we just can’t wait to get out on the court.”

The game will be broadcast on ABC and Foxtel.
