CLUTCH COURTNEY NAMED IN WNBL TEAM OF THE WEEK
Courtney Woods has been named in the WNBL’s team of the week. The co-captain played twice in a double header round 5 road trip for Townsville. She was solid in the Fire’s Lynx loss on, dishing out 7 assists and scoring 7 points against Perthn before exploding against Adelaide and inspiring the Fire’s incredible comeback win. The guard registered 8 assists and led all scorers with 25 points, the last of which won the game for the visitors as the clock expired.
Fellow Co-captain Alicia Froling was in awe of her teammates performance, particularly in the final quarter, when Woods led a Fire fightback from 15 points down.
“Courtney was amazing, obviously some massive plays, game winner. Yeah she’s probably the heart and soul of this team.”
Townsville General Manager Sam Pascoe praised the club’s current longest serving player, for her coming of age in orange.
This is her fifth season at the Fire and you can really see that in those games where she kind of puts everyone on her back and goes let’s get this done. So I’m very proud of Courtney, especially with how she’s taken to this new leadership role.
Woods barley had a breather against Adelaide sitting out just 3 and a half minutes of the contest. She has enjoyed a few days off since, with Coach Shannon Seebohm giving his players an extended break before returning to training, given Townsville’s tough travel schedule to start the season, and the team’s 2 week turn around before playing again. Next up is another away game, with a trip to top of the table Bendigo followed by a stretch of games at the Fire Pit. Pascoe’s encouraging fans to get behind the team at home to round out 2024.
“5 games in December from the 14 to the 31st which is a lot and will probably take a decent toll on the group. But 4 of 5 are at home, so we’re really encouraging everyone to grab a 4 game membership in December. It’s a lot of basketball but what else would you rather be doing..”
