Emerging Opals to meet Team USA

August 23, 2017 | Townsville Fire news
Australia will be left ruing what could have been yesterday as a 58-63 loss to Russia has propelled them into a quarter-final showdown with Team USA at the World University Games. Another double-double from JCU Townsville Fire forward Darcee Garbin – 14 points and 11 rebounds – was not enough to rescue the Emerging Opals, who were within one inside the final minute as Russia made them pay from the foul line. https://twitter.com/AUSUniroos/status/900237477193043968 With Fire championship winner Ally Wilson top-scoring with 15 points, the remainder of the Emerging Opals failed to reach double figures as they consigned their team to a cut-throat clash with the reigning champions. As she has been all tournament, Garbin was the star for the Emerging Opals as she valiantly tried to lead her side past the Russians. Sloppy ball handling, however, coughed up 19 turnovers, and in a tight game, that proved the difference in the end. The Emerging Opals will meet the USA from 7.30pm on Friday night.
