Fight to the end: Garbin

January 10, 2019 | Townsville Fire news

Two-time JCU Townsville Fire championship winner Darcee Garbin has implored her team to fight to the end ahead of Friday night’s clash with the UC Capitals.

Having won three of the past four titles, the reigning champions will miss the post-season for the first time in close to a decade after a retched run with injuries including six-time Chemist Warehouse WNBL MVP Suzy Batkovic.

With the Caps looking to shore up top spot, Garbin said it was important that the Fire closed out the season on a winning note, regardless of ladder positions.

“It hurts, especially given the club’s been so successful the last few years,” Garbin said.

“I remember two years ago when we lost the semi to Sydney it’s a similar feeling, knowing we’re not even going to have a chance.

“We want to close out the season with a win, and send Suzy out with a win.”

While Batkovic is unlikely to suit up against the Caps – nor Dandenong in Melbourne on Sunday – the Fire captain declared herself a certain starter for next Saturday’s final game of the season against Sydney Uni.

Having resume training in recent weeks, Batkovic will draw the curtain on her stellar career in front of a huge crowd who is slated to show their appreciation to the best that’s ever been.

“Not being able to help the team and play has been really difficult, but the chance to come out and be on my home court before I hang up the boots will be really nice,” Batkovic declared earlier today.

“I guess it just depends on the day how it pulls up and how it’s feeling, but I’m hoping to be out there for at least 15, 20 minutes and might get lucky and be able to play some more.”

The Fire host the Caps from 7pm at Townsville Stadium on Friday night.
