FIRE & FLYERS FACE OFF FOR FIRST TIME

Following four straight home games the Fire returns to the road for round 10 of the WNBL. Townsville tussles with Southside on Saturday afternoon, it’ll be the first meeting between the teams this season. The visitors head into the contest in third place on the ladder with 7 wins and 5 losses to their name, while the defending champions sit second last with a 4 and 8record. Both sides will be aiming to bounce back to the winners list after the Fire fell to Bendigo and the Flyers were shot down by Sydney.

Townsville’s travelling party won’t be full, with coach Shannon Seebohm confirming Lauren Mansfields hamstring complaint was aggravated at training yesterday, so wont take part in the game.

In brighter news, Saffron Shiels has foot has recovered well and she has travelled with the team to Melbourne for the game.

Seebohm says there’s no point dwelling on an unrelenting injury toll and he’s looking at the positives of the club’s depth being tested.

“Were low on numbers right now but like we’ve said in the locker room it’s next person up and it gives people like Jess McDowell-White and Nya Lock more opportunity, and we’re going to need them going forward.”

Courtney Woods was named in the final team of the week for 2024, after averaging 17.5 points 7 assists and 8 rebounds in appearances against Geelong and Bendigo across round 9, and she’ll once again be key to Townsville’s chances against Southside.
