Fire leaders named in Team of the Week

February 8, 2017 | Townsville Fire news
JCU Townsville Fire leaders Suzy Batkovic and Mia Murray have been named in the WNBL Team of the Week. During a crucial road trip, Batkovic and Murray were simply breathtaking for the Fire as they guided their team to back-to-back wins over Dandenong and Bendigo. Batkovic heads the team after winning her third Player of the Week award. With 28.5 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two blocks across two victories that have put the JCU Townsville Fire in the box seat for a play-off position, Batkovic also earns her an eighth Team of the Week nomination which equals her tally from last season. She is joined by Fire teammate Mia Murray who has been named for a third time after averaging 21 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in those two wins, while hitting 7-14 (50%) overall from beyond the arc. “Suzy’s putting up phenomenal numbers and teams have to tighten up on her,” Murray said. “They’re sending two, sometimes three players at her and on the perimeter we have to stay aggressive. “When we do that, it’s amazing how many shots Suzy gets and that’s only a good thing for us. “She’s willing to spit the ball out and has confidence we’ll knock the shot down.” Joining the Fire pair in the team is fellow forwards Marianna Tolo and Asia Taylor, along with Perth shooting guard Sami Whitcomb. The Fire return to their home floor on Friday night when they host Dandenong in a top-four clash. Click here to pre-purchase tickets to the Fire and the Rangers.
