Fire look to finalise roster

July 21, 2017 | Townsville Fire news
The JCU Townsville Fire will look to finalise their playing roster in the near future following the return of Claudia Brassard from Guam. Having collected a gold medal at the recent Under-17 Oceania Championships with Australia, the Fire coach has now turned her attention to rounding out her playing squad, with the acquisition of a second import now looking highly likely. The Fire have enjoyed a prosperous off-season with the return of dual championship winner Cayla George and the signing of LA Sparks sharp-shooter Sydney Wiese, with Brassard confirming that she’ll look to bolster her back court with another guard. “I’m happy with the squad that we have assembled to date,” Brassard said. “We’ve been looking for another guard or swingman in Australia, and with most options now exhausted, it looks probable that we’ll go with another import. “We’ve had some highly talented players sent to us in recent time, it’s now a matter of working through the tape and deciding who would be the best fit.” With the WNBL fixture poised to be released soon, the Fire are shaping up nicely ahead of the 2017/18 season, with a raft of stars performing on the international stage. Rachael Sporn Medallist Micaela Cocks is presently in India with the New Zealand team ahead of the Asia Cup, while Zitina Aokuso will represent Australia in Italy at the Under-19 World Cup commencing tomorrow.
