The JCU Townsville Fire are excited to announce Alecia ‘Sug’ Sutton will be joining the team for the upcoming WNBL21 season

At 22 years old and hailing from St Louis, Missouri , the 5’7 guard pushes the tempo and knows how to distribute the ball.

In the 2020 WNBA draft, the Washington Mystics selected Sutton out of University of Texas with the 36th overall and final pick in the third round. The Longhorn, came out of college averaging 10.4 points, 4.1 assists, and 3.7 rebounds per game in her senior season, throughout the 2020 WNBA Hub Sutton averaged 9.4 minutes in her rookie season.

Following a stint in Poland with Ślęza Wrocław where she averaged 21 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists per game. Sug can not wait to get to Townsville.

“I’m super excited to join the JCU Townsville Fire this upcoming season, it will be my first time coming to Australia and I can not wait to get down there.

“I have spoken to Shannon and am really excited about his program and the team, I have also heard that the Fire fans are the best fans in Australia so I can not wait to come and play in front of you this season.

Head Coach Shannon Seebohm is excited have Sug join the Fire for this upcoming season,

“Sug is going to add another exciting element to our team with her ability to push the ball and get us out in transition. Watching her play in College, the WNBA and also last season in Poland it was evident how creative she is with the ball and was exciting to see her ability to get out and play in the open floor.”

“She has a shiftiness to her game off the dribble which will make her difficult to defend and when you combine that with her ability to then bring her team mates into the game from the point guard position, it should help us immensely on the offensive end. I also love her toughness defensively and believe she possesses the physical attributes that we want in our guards here at the Fire.”

Sutton will join Monique Billings Stephanie Reid, Mia Murray, Lauren Nicholson, Zitina Aoukso, Nadeen Payne, Lara McSpadden and Courtney Woods – The Townsville Fire have almost completed their exciting line up for the upcoming season, and will be announcing their final roster spot in the coming days.
