Fire stars celebrate book week

August 23, 2017 | Townsville Fire news
JCU Townsville Fire captain Suzy Batkovic has assisted Children’s Book Week today by reading to students at St Clare’s Catholic School in Burdell. As part of the Fire’s Lendlease Schools Program, the five-time WNBL MVP was a willing participant in this morning’s activities which promotes and celebrates children’s literature. Over the course of the week, students have been participating in costume parades, diorama displays and reading activities right across North Queensland and the nation. Fellow WNBL championship winning captain Rachael McCully was also in attendance. “It was a fun day,” Batkovic said. “We love being able to get into schools and to reinforce to kids the value of their education. “With so much readily accessible technology, it’s great to see that the art of reading - and immersing yourself in books – is being practiced by the next generation.” The Fire will participate in a further clinic at Weir State School tomorrow, while they participated in activities at Good Shepherd Catholic School on Monday and Heatley High School on Tuesday. The Lendlease Schools Program includes basketball clinics, educational activities such as Book Week and hands-on sessions that promote healthy living, nutrition, getting active, making positive life choices and resilience.
