FIXTURE UPDATE: TOWNSVILLE v SOUTHSIDE GAME
FIXTURE UPDATE: TOWNSVILLE v SOUTHSIDE GAME
Cyclone Kirrily in North Queensland has today forced the closure of Townsville Airport. Therefore, the Cygnett WNBL game between the Townsville Fire and Southside Flyers, scheduled for Saturday 27 January at 7.30pm (AEST), will no longer go ahead.
The league has been monitoring the Cyclone throughout the week, and been in regular communication with both Clubs regarding making a decision on whether the game will proceed. With the airport closure this morning, and in the interests of athletes and community welfare, a decision was made earlier today that the game would not proceed.
The Southside Flyers will therefore play their game against the Sydney Flames tonight, and instead of travelling onto Townsville tomorrow, will return to Melbourne.
The league will now work with both teams to attempt to find a suitable date to reschedule the game. Should that not be possible, then Rule 2.11e from WNBL Rules will be applied:
2.11e WNBL League Management will assess if the game is required to be replayed depending on ladder position and if the game is needed to determine playoffs position. If abandoned prior tip off and not replayed, the teams effected by the abandoned game win/loss percentage will be determined by one (1) less game.
Note: Ladder positions in the WNBL are determined by win / loss percentage. If teams are on the same win / loss percentage, the next determinant is the split between the two teams.
Please note our focus now shifts to the whole community. Stay safe during this time and look after yourselves and your loved ones. Further details will follow over the coming days regarding ticketing information when these next steps can be finalised.
As with the rest of Townsville, our staff, coaches, and players will be home taking precautions over the next 24 hours following training this morning. Their wellbeing and need for family focus at this time is the priority.
More information will be shared as soon as available.
