Fowler eyes medal at Youth Olympics

October 16, 2018 | Townsville Fire news

Rising JCU Townsville Fire star Alex Fowler is just one win away from playing off for a medal at the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires.

Needing a top-two finish in the pool phase to advance to the quarter-finals, Australia topped their group – despite a narrow loss to Spain – and will now meet the Ukraine to reach the medal rounds tonight.

Having defeated the Netherlands (11-7) and Czech Republic (15-11) on the opening day, Australia suffered a setback as they were edged out 7-12 against Spain.

They recovered later in the day to defeat Estonia 19-15 to book their ticket to the knockout rounds.

Having captured a bronze medal with the Sapphires at the Under-17 World Cup earlier this year in the traditional format, Fowler is now within striking distance of achieving a unique double in the 3 x 3 format.
