Queensland Country Health Fund Academy forward Alex Fowler will vie for selection at the up-coming Under-16 Asia Cup in India after being named in the Australian squad.
Fowler was one of 18 players named by the Sapphires to attend next month’s selection camp at the Centre of Excellence in Canberra, while two-time championship winning assistant Mark Wrobel will also be in attendance as part of Shannon Seebohm’s coaching panel.
Having captured gold at the most recent edition of the Under-17 World Championships, the Sapphires will be hoping they can become the first Australian team to successfully defend their title.
Former SEQ Stars Academy representative Ashlee Hannan is the only other Queenslander named in the squad, with six players to be cut ahead of the World Cup qualifying tournament in Bengaluru from October 22 to 28.
“I am very happy with the squad we have selected for the camp in September,” Seebohm said.
“There is a high level of talent and athleticism and it is an exciting group.
“The players we have chosen will give us the ability to implement a similar style of play to the one we had success with in 2016 (when the Sapphires won the World Championship gold medal).”
Fowler got her first taste of international basketball last month when he represented Australia at the FIBA 3x3 World Cup in China.
