GAME DAY | The Fire’s next three games are all on the road

January 31, 2025 | Townsville Fire news

The Fire’s next three games are all on the road. Nia Coffey… Who’ll make her first appearance in Fire colours outside of Townsville tonight. The guards’ glad she didn’t have to travel when she first arrived at the club, at the start of the month.

“I was actually thankful about that just so I could get accommodated here and get to know the girls and everything and the coaching staff. They were really patient with me and got in the gym with me extra if I needed it. They communicate very well and have just helped me every day. But now I’m looking forward to getting on the road and just continuing what we’ve been doing.”

The import is yet to taste defeat, with the Fire shooting for a sixth straight win, in round 14. Facing the Flyers for a third time this month, the visitors are aiming for a series sweep after following up a buzzer beater victory in Melbourne with a double-digit triumph at home. Coffey’s confident her teammates won’t take their eyes off the ball battling the bottom side, out of finals contention.

“I just think we need to focus on us and just making sure that we’re continuing to grow as a team and not just plateau off or just kind of lose focus on some of the smaller things, that would be easy to do.”

Coach Shannon Seebohm would like to see his team do a better job on Southside import Naz Hillmon who’s been a standout in the league this season, despite the defending champions’ struggles. The American has scored 53 points and collected 23 rebounds in the two clashes.

“Oh definitely you know she’s probably one of the MVP favourites. She’s had a great season and she’s had 2 big games against us.” I think particularly building into the finals we don’t want to be that team that just lets the best player on the other team go off every time, so I think we’ll just tighten up a few things and maybe look at a few different strategies this time with her, but you know the main thing is that we go down there and get another win.”

Seebohm wants the players to be on the front foot from the get go, especially after allowing them extra time off following Saturday’s success against Geelong.

“We had an extra day off after the last game just because we had three games in a week, so give the girls a bit more time to rest and recover.”

Tip off tonight is at 6pm catch the action on the 9 Now App or follow the club’s social media pages for score updates.
