UC Capitals recruit Lauren Scherf top-scored with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Fire championship winner Ally Wilson chimed in with 11 points and eight rebounds.
After a topsy-turvy start, the Emerging Opals made their move in the second term as they opened up a 10-point lead by the main break.
Garbin was the sparkplug for her team as she reached double figures off the back of five from six shooting from the field.
Having been appointed co-captain of the team, the Fire star led from the front as they held on to clinch a seven-point victory.
