Gold for Garbin at World Uni Games

Australia has captured gold at the World University Games in Taipei after a stunning performance from JCU Townsville Fire forward Darcee Garbin.

The Emerging Opals co-captain, who had been simply brilliant en route to the final, saved her best performance for last as she top-scored with 30 points, 10 rebounds and six assists to defeat Japan 85-78.

When the whips were cracking, Garbin was simply brilliant for Australia, netting five points inside the opening minutes – including a well-time three – along with a block and an assist to get the Opals off to a flyer.

The WNBL championship winner failed to slow down, however, as she paced her team with 15 points and six rebounds at the main change as the Emerging Opals led 43-33.

Australia made their move in the third quarter as they busted open the game, and while Japan challenged in the final term, they hung onto record a seven-point win.

UC Capitals centre Lauren Scherf finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Fire championship winner Ally Wilson chimed in with 17 points.
