Goodchild named All*Star in Guam

JCU Townsville Fire development player Miela Goodchild has put the finishing touches on a stunning campaign in Guam with a gold medal and selection in the tournament’s All*Star Five. Australia has successfully navigated their way through to the next phase of World Cup qualifying by defeating New Zealand in the final of the Under-17 Oceania Championships. Having barely broken a sweat until the gold medal game, the Sapphires were challenged early in the final by the Kiwis before fighting back to claim an 81-60 victory. Goodchild finished with 17 points, four rebounds and three assists in another polished display. Over the course of the tournament, the shooting guard led the Sapphires in scoring with a tournament-high 23 points per game, while also averaging 4.6 rebounds, 3.6 steals and 3.4 assists. As a result, the 17-year-old was named alongside Australian teammates Shyla Heal and Isabelle Bourne in the All*Star Five, with Samoa’s Frances Ropati and New Zealand’s Charlisse Leger-Walker rounding out the line-up. Australia has now qualified for next year’s Under-18 Asia Championships, with the top-four advancing to the Under-19 World Cup in 2019.
