Tess Madgen has been crowned the Chemist Warehouse WNBL Player of the Week after posting a career-high 14 assists at the weekend.

Having signed with the JCU Townsville Fire during the off-season, Madgen has begun to re-capture her All*Star form in recent games and was simply brilliant on Saturday as she led her side to a thrilling overtime victory.

With the match going down to the wire, Madgen inbounded to six-time WNBL MVP Suzy Batkovic with just 2.7 seconds on the clock with the Fire captain fouled on the play.

While Batkovic missed her first free throw, she cooly slotted the second to force overtime before the Fire clinched an 89-82 victory in extra time.

Having also posted a season-high 15 points in the fixture, Madgen said she was gaining confidence by the week and was thrilled to receive the accolade.

“(I’m) pretty stoked,” Madgen said.

“A lot of people had massive games – I mean there were four people in our game who scored over 15 points – and Becca Tobin had a massive double-double and the same as Suzy (Batkovic).

“To be named Player of the Week in this league is a huge honour…getting my teammates involved in the game really helped that.”

Not surprisingly, Madgen was also announced in the WNBL Team of the Week alongside Batkovic, who finished with 25 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks, to receive her fourth nomination in 2018/19.

Batkovic can surpass league legend Rachael Sporn on Thursday night as the WNBL’s greatest ever scorer after bridging the gap at the weekend to just 19 points.
