Micaela Cocks named Captain for upcoming season
Entering her 9th season with the Townsville Fire, Captain of the New Zealand Tall Ferns and now the new captain of the JCU Townsville Fire.
Micaela joined the Fire in the 2011/12 Season and has played 204 WNBL games and is only the second player to play over 200 games for the JCU Townsville Fire. She is a 3 time championship winner and was the Rachael Spon Medalist in 2015/16 Season.
“I’m just so passionate about the Fire. I’ve been here nine seasons and I love the culture and I want to continue building that and being a successful team,” she said.
I’m not big on being in the spotlight and stuff like that, but leading by example and just that low-key practical communication style is what I’m about.”
“I think within our team we have so many leaders and I still want everyone to stick to their leadership style and still be leaders on the team,” Cocks said.
“We have so much experience … it’s huge and that’s what’s going to make us a really successful and smart basketball team this season.”
Fire coach Shannon Seebohm described Cocks as the “perfect choice” for the captaincy as the club’s longest-serving current player while he also praised her leadership traits.
“She displays all the values and things that I think are important and I know the club also feel the same way,” Seebohm said.
“She’s played over 200 games for the club and is a legend of the club. She’s won championships here and I’m just thrilled that she’s able to be our captain this season.
“She’s going to lead by example every day and I think that’s great for us to have her in that position and also be supported by some of our senior players in that role as well.”
The JCU Townsville Fire’s Chemist Warehouse WNBL campaign begins October 12th when they take on the Southside Flyers in Dandenong.
