One of Townsville Fire’s Longest-Serving Volunteers

As National Volunteer Week shines a light on those who give their time and effort to better their communities, Donna Turner has been a steadfast volunteer with the Townsville Fire since 2024, marking a remarkable journey that spans over two decades. Donna has been volunteering with the Townsville Fire as the Team’s Manager since 2004, and recently completed her 20th Season with us.
For 20 years, Donna has been team manager. Making sure that the first aid kits are fully stocked for training and home games, that the away kit is stocked, uniforms and warm up tops all washed and cleaned for game day as well bags are packed for the team away games. Donna is at every home game on the side lines handing out water bottles and towels to all the players and on the odd occasion will travel with the team if required.
Donna took on the role in 2004 because the previous manager had taken a job in Canberra, and Donna had previous experience managing for Townsville Teams as well as Queensland State Teams, so thought it was only natural for her to put her hand up to manage the Fire.
When asked why Donna still loves coming back to manage the team, Donna responded by saying “I love to give back to the basketball community which managing the fire has given me the opportunity to do so and I have made some amazing friends along the way with coaching staff as well as the management!”

As we celebrate National Volunteer Week, we thank Donna for her incredible commitment to the Townsville Fire.  Some of Donna’s biggest highlights with the Fire are the championships. “When the team won our first premiership and again the following season, and the next premiership after. Winning the premiership has always been special with the players and coaching staff , plus all the friends I have made along the way the coaching staff as well as  the management.” Said Donna.

Donna’s volunteer story is far from over. As she continues her journey with the Townsville Fire, she remains an integral part of the Townsville Fire!
