QLD North secures bronze medal

Queensland North has secured a bronze medal at the Under-16 Australian Junior Championships on the Sunshine Coast.

With four of the Fire’s Queensland Country Health Fund Academy representatives in the line-up – Lauren Andrews, Shaylee Browning, Ainslie Minogue and Chailee Ward – the Mike St-Maurice-led outfit became the first Queensland North team to medal at the competition after defeating NSW Metro 73-32 in the play-off for bronze.

Having finished second in their group, the North secured state bragging rights over the South with an 80-36 victory.

In the semi-final, however, Victoria Country proved too strong – despite a pool loss to the North – as they clinched a 66-47 win.

The North responded in the best possible fashion with their wire-to-wire win over NSW Metro courtesy of a game-high 29 points from Cairns’ Shaneice Swain who was among the tournament’s best.

Ward was also a standout for the North over the tournament with the Townsville point-guard averaging 16.1 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists to put herself in Sapphires contention.
