Season schedule released

September 2, 2022 | Townsville Fire news

The WNBL draw has been unveiled and the JCU Fire is excited for another exhilarating competition. Townsville will host 11 of 21 regular season games, the first of which is in the opening round, against Canberra on November 6. The Fire will welcome Melbourne for a New Year’s Eve clash, and again during Indigenous round, on February 15. The club’s annual Army game at home will be in round 15, on February 26.  Of course, the team is determined to play finals basketball at the Fire Pit in 2023, after missing out on the playoffs last season.

Lauren Nicholson would love to lead Townsville back into the top four and in doing so notch up a personal milestone. If the classy captain doesn’t miss any action and the side secures a playoff position, she’ll make her 50th appearance for the JCU Fire, in Townsville’s first final. Loz ended last season on the sideline due to an ankle injury, but the guard is fit and firing for the coming campaign.

Courtney Woods will reach the same achievement in the penultimate game of the regular season, all things going to plan. All 30 of her WNBL outings have been in our colours. Steph Reid has played 33 times for us, but the point guard is just ten games away from a half century of WNBL appearances, having featured for Southside seven times. She should reach her milestone early in the new year.

Meanwhile Mikaela Ruef is closing in on triple figures and the stage for the centre to do so against one of her former clubs. Fittingly, one of Townsville’s key signings should make her hundredth WNBL appearance at home, against Perth, in round six.

One lucky fan could be celebrating their own special moment on the court at the first home game. A spectator will be selected to attempt a half-court shot, for a new car, provided, by one of the JCU Fire’s major sponsors, Audi. Loyal supporters could find themselves shooting a few buckets at training too, The club will hold a monthly open session for members, who’ll get to mingle with the players and see how hard the squad scrimmages.
