Super sub sinks the Boomers
JCU Townsville Fire super sub Darcee Garbin has ensured a series sweep over the Melbourne Boomers with a stunning performance on her home floor.
During a record-breaking night, Garbin, who passed 1000 WNBL points en route to being named the First Things First MVP, guided the Fire to a 73-66 victory with a match-winning 18 points and nine rebounds.

Front-court partner Suzy Batkovic was also brilliant with 17 points and 16 rebounds as the Fire found a way to win, despite shooting just 30 per cent from the floor.
The victory provides them with a one-game cushion over Sydney Uni at the top-of-the-table and an important win before their up-coming revenge games against Perth, Dandenong and the Flames on the road in the next nine days.
“It was a tough game,” Batkovic said.
“Melbourne fought really hard – particularly without Liz (Cambage) – and it was hard to get going.
“But we found a way to get the win and that’s all that matters.”
While the Fire made a hot start to lead 11-7 early in the opening term, head coach Claudia Brassard was forced to burn a timeout as the Boomers went on a 12-0 run.
The interval appeared to jolt them into action as they levelled the scores at 21-21 at the first change.
With Garbin and Mia Murray lighting it up in the second term, the Fire was able to open up a four-point lead at the main change which reached double figures midway through the third.

The Boomers responded, however, as the lead changed hands on several occasions in the final quarter before the Fire held their nerve down the stretch.
The Fire will now travel to Melbourne ahead of their Cluster Round encounter against Perth, who stretched their own winning streak to six with a win over Dandenong tonight.
