The good, the bad and the ugly

Hosting Adelaide in round 12 of the WNBL is music to Townsville’s ears having recently returned home from a second 8 day plus road triple header of the season. Forward Mikaela Ruef is glad the team’s final travel during the regular competition is a sole game in Canberra.

“Yeah it’s not great being on a 9 day road trip, it’s just tough being away that long like you don’t sleep in your bed, you don’t usually cook your meals and those little things, but we got through it and we’re just happy to be back.”

Not everyone returned unscathed though, Amanda Zahui B hurt her calf. Ruef hopes the import doesn’t spend too long on the sideline.

“She hurt herself in that last game, so it’ll just depend on how she feels and how her body recovers. It’s nothing too major maybe a pull or a strain or tear or something like that.”

The Boomers 94-58 victory added insult to injury on Saturday night but Courtney Woods wants the ladders leaders to use their heavy defeat as a helpful humbling.

“It was an ugly game, I think from the start we weren’t really in it as much as we should have been, and I think by the end you could see that. So that’s just a reminder that even though we are on top of the table there’s definitely teams that can still beat us, but I think it’s not necessarily a bad thing to have that before finals.”

The guard took plenty of positives from the trip, especially after the Fire’s triumph over Bendigo, followed by a win in the opening encounter of consecutive clashes with Melbourne, clinched a playoff position. The first target of Townsville’s title defence.

“I guess we were as happy as you can be with 2 wins out of 3. I mean obviously that’s the point of every year is you want to be able to compete for a championship, so to be able to lock up that spot early, it is kind of nice in the back of everyone’s heads that we know we’re going to be playing finals basketball.”

The reigning champions will play 4 of their remaining 5 games before the finals at the Fire Pit, starting with a tussle against the Lightning on Saturday night. Tip off is at 6.30, Purchase tickets here.
