Wilson named Player of the Week
February 14, 2017 | Townsville Fire news
JCU Townsville Fire point guard Kelly Wilson has been named the WNBL Player of the Week.
Having endured an injury ravaged season, the dual championship winner has been thrust back into the Fire’s starting line-up following a fractured ankle and responded against Dandenong at the weekend with 16 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.
While Wilson controlled the tempo, she also failed to register a turnover in 30 minutes and also registered a steal while shooting 66% from the field.

“I’m feeling a lot more confident out on the court and probably for the first time this season I’m feeling good and ready to go,” Wilson said.
“I feel like I’ve had a three-month holiday in the middle of the season, but I am good to go now.”
Not surprisingly, Wilson also headlines the WNBL Team of the Week alongside Adelaide Lightning guard Alex Ciabattoni and the UC Capitals’ Abby Wehrung, who will miss Saturday night’s do-or-die game with the Fire after suffering a season-ending ankle injury.
Perth forward Carley Mijovic and Sydney Uni Flames sharp-shooter Belinda Snell rounds out the team, which is missing a centre.

Despite the personal accolades, Wilson is firmly focussed on this week’s must-win encounter against the Capitals.
“Both teams no what’s at stake – obviously it’s a finals position – but if we can continue the form that we’ve had for the past few weeks (we’ll be fine),” Wilson said.
“Obviously we know that we can win – especially on our home court – so that’s what we plan to do.”
The Fire host the Capitals from 7pm on Saturday at Townsville Stadium.
