WOODS WANTS TO AVOID ANOTHER BUZZER BEATER IN ADELAIDE

February 4, 2025 | Townsville Fire news

Courtney Woods produced a miracle last time Townsville traveled to the city of churches. While the Co-Captain’s clutch game-winning shot was exhilarating, she’s not sure her heart can take another pulsating finish.

“Yeah I think obviously last time was a really exciting win to finish on the buzzer, hopefully going into this game it can be a little bit less stressful.”

The guard didn’t just deliver in a frantic finale, she starred throughout the contest, claiming a game high 25 points to go along with 8 assists and 5 rebounds. While Woods was the standout on that occasion, she insists any number of Fire players could be the difference this time around.

“Early on in the season we kind of had 1 or 2 people finding their feet and now we have 5 or 6 that could you know be a leading scorer any week. I think from now to then we’re obviously a different team we’ve had a lot of growth, and we’ve obviously added Nia Coffey.”

Nia Coffey should get a warm reception returning to Adelaide after spearheading the Lightning’s run to the 2018/19 grand final. The home side still has a faint finals hope this season but can’t afford any more losses and Fire coach Shannon Seebohm is wary of what the South Australians can produce, especially after they stunned the Lynx last weekend.

“I think they’re one of the most talented rosters in the league. They just beat Perth the other day and they’re obviously still fighting for a finals spot and you know they’re in a desperate must win situation, so we’re going to get their best effort and I think that’s good for us going into the finals. But again, the Fire’s focus has been more internal rather than spending too much time scouting on the opposition. It’s been a recipe for success so far and Seebohm isn’t about to change things this deep into the campaign.

“Now that we’re in this position we just want to make sure we finish strong and go into the finals with some good form. I thought last game we were a little up and down, I think we played really well in patches and then not so well in others. The main thing we’re trying to work on is just being able to play that consistent basketball game in game out, quarter in quarter out, and just go into the playoffs with some real rhythm and momentum.”

Townsville will be shooting for a seventh straight win and a series sweep over Adelaide, after also defeating the Lighting at the Fire Pit during the season’s infancy.

Tip-off is at 6.30pm Queensland time. Catch the action on EPSN or follow the team’s progress via the club’s social media.
