Five UC Capitals players named in 2019 Opals squad
On top of securing a spot in the WNBL 2019 finals, five UC Capitals players were today named in the 2019 Chemist Warehouse Opals squad.
The squad includes previous Opals superstars, Marianna Tolo, Kelsey Griffin and Leilani Mitchell, who are very familiar with representing Australia.
Both Tolo and Mitchell had to had to pull out of the squad in 2018 after facing injuries, and Opals Coach, Sandy Brondello, shares their excitement to be back on the squad.
“I am most happy to see the injured players like Tolo, Mitchell and Sara Blicavs return to the squad,” said Brondello.
Kristy Wallace was also named despite tearing her ACL for the second time in short succession in December 2018. Her selection will undoubtedly provide extra motivation to commit herself to yet another gruelling nine-month recovery period.
Lastly, Lauren Scherf was selected after playing a major role in the first half of the UC Capitals season with Marianna Tolo out on injury. Scherf having to step up showing dedication and improvement has clearly made an impression on Brondello.
“I definitely was not expecting it. I knew that I had been working hard throughout the season but I didn’t think this would actually happen,” said Scherf.
First things first, though, the UC Capitals must win another game to secure one of the top two positions on the ladder to gain home-court advantage for finals. The team is ready for their double header weekend starting in Townsville to play the Fire and ending in Sydney to play the Flames.
