Gorris embracing the challenge of a young UC Capitals group

October 28, 2024 | UC Capitals news

With one week to go until game one, Paul Gorris and his UC Capitals side are ready to show off their competitiveness and prove that they’re here to cause disruption this season.

Gorris has been working on building the team’s chemistry ahead of what will be many of his players first fully contracted year in the Cygnett WNBL.

“I think it’s going to take a while [to hit our stride] just because we are young. We’ve got some players, that haven’t played in the WNBL before, but that have been development players so they’re going to get their first real taste of playing and being in a rotation.

“I’m not shying away from the fact that I think we’ll build over the season, and build over time, and hopefully we’re playing our best basketball by the back end of the season,” Gorris said.

The Caps spent the final part of their preseason with two practice games against the Centre of Excellence to test their rotations ahead of round one.

With only two players returning to the court from last season, fans might not know what to expect from the new look side, but Gorris is assured the Caps won’t be a team to be taken lightly.

“I know that people want to call this a rebuild, but to me rebuilds making excuses that you’re going to lose and I’m not in this to lose. We’re going to compete our backsides off and do whatever we can and we’re going to take it to every team.

The Caps open their season in Sydney on Sunday 3 November against the Flames, before heading back home and making their return to Canberra’s AIS Arena.

The last time Gorris coached in the venue was in his 2019/20 grand final win over the Southside Flyers and is encouraging fans to come along and bring back the energy.

“Come and see an exciting young group of players play. Regardless of results, I think that the style that we’re going to play, the talent level that we’ve got in such a young group is really exciting.

“So, I think the fans are going to enjoy like how we play, but the talent that we’ve already got,” he said.
