Jade Melbourne: From Olympic Glory to UC Capitals Ambitions
Jade Melbourne reflects on a whirlwind six months that have accelerated her basketball career, marked by a significant trade from the Seattle Storm to the Washington Mystics and the chance to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
As she returns to Canberra, Melbourne is brimming with excitement for the upcoming UC Capitals season and the fulfillment of her lifelong dreams, most notably winning an Olympic bronze medal with the Australian Opals. These milestones have shaped her career in ways she never imagined, and she describes this period as surreal and deeply meaningful, cementing it as an unforgettable chapter in her basketball journey.
“It’s been fun. I haven’t had too much time to reflect yet… but the last six months have been really cool,” Jade shared. “Getting traded from Seattle to Washington was a whirlwind, but ended up being the best thing that could’ve happened to me.”
The trade was a pivotal moment for Melbourne, who saw her role grow as she adjusted to playing with the Washington Mystics. Her increased court time helped build her confidence and elevate her game, and this form continued when she joined the Australian national team for the Olympics.
Melbourne played consistent minutes for the Opals, contributing to their success and helping secure a hard-fought bronze medal. “It still hasn’t sunk in… saying ‘do you want to see my Olympic medal?’ It doesn’t feel real,” she said, reflecting on the emotional fulfillment of achieving her childhood dream of becoming an Olympian.
Beyond the tangible rewards, Melbourne’s Olympic experience brought new perspective to her career. “When you grow up dreaming of moments like these, you don’t really picture how they’ll happen. You just keep pushing toward the goal. But now, I’ve lived it, and I’ve realized how important the journey is, not just the destination,” she explained.
This revelation has only deepened her determination to keep growing as a player and continue representing her country on the world stage.
Back in Canberra, Melbourne is eager to transition from international competition to domestic league action with the UC Capitals.
She returns to a team that has undergone considerable change, but she is excited about the opportunity to contribute to a young, dynamic squad.
“Everyone’s here with a different story… they’ve got something to prove,” Jade said, expressing admiration for the energy and hunger she has seen in her teammates. With notable additions like Charli Collier, the first overall pick in the 2021 WNBA Draft, and promising talent Katie Deeble, the team is shaping up to be a force to be reckoned with this season.
Jade is also looking forward to reuniting with UC Capitals coach Paul Gorris, under whose guidance she has flourished. “Gorrie’s been great for me and for this team. He brings out the best in all of us,” she said.
Their synergy will be key as the Capitals look to build on past successes and return to the championship conversation.

The return of the UC Capitals to their historic home at the AIS Arena adds yet another layer of excitement.
It’s a venue where the team has celebrated back-to-back championships, and for Melbourne, the opportunity to play in front of a packed house is something she relishes.
“I’m so excited… I know what the energy feels like when you sell that place out,” she said with a smile. The Capitals’ return to the AIS has fans buzzing, and with tickets for the opening round priced at just five dollars, the team is expecting a full house as they kick off what promises to be a thrilling season.
Melbourne’s excitement for the upcoming season is palpable.
She is eager to bring her Olympic experience, renewed confidence, and competitive drive to the UC Capitals. “There’s a special vibe around this group,” she said. “We’re all on the same page—we want to win. Everyone’s putting in the work to make that happen.” This determination is shared by her teammates Charli Collier, including one who recently texted her with a simple but powerful message. Jade shared, “She texted me and she’s like, ‘I just want to win. I want to compete. We’re going to have a great year.’”
This hunger for success perfectly aligns with Melbourne’s mindset as she looks ahead to what she believes will be a breakout year for the UC Capitals. Despite the challenges of team restructuring and young players stepping up, the belief within the squad is undeniable. Melbourne’s journey—marked by her Olympic triumph and return to Canberra—is a reflection of her resilience and dedication to the sport.
As the Capitals embark on their new season, fans and teammates alike are ready to witness what this dynamic team can achieve. With Melbourne’s leadership and the collective drive of her squad, the UC Capitals seem poised for success, setting the stage for a season that could very well be as memorable as her Olympic journey.
