Lauren Jackson opens Women In Sport Forum

Former Opals and UC Capitals Star Lauren Jackson was on hand at the National Convention Centre on Thursday night to open the 2018 Women in Sport Forum. 

With a diverse range of speakers, including AFLW premiership coach Bec Goddard and former Matilda Julie Murray, the limelight was firmly cast on the key issues and discussions intrinsic to women’s sport in Australia. 

A four-time Olympic medallist with the Opals and four-time WNBL MVP, the former Capitals forward and centre was the most recognisable name amongst the attendees and was proud to open the event. 

She hoped that the forum would open more doors for women in sport in roles not just on the court or field of play, but also off it.  

“The incredible women we have speaking here tonight come with a wealth of knowledge and experience and we hope you enjoy the evening and walk away with a better understanding related to the barriers and opportunities facing women and girls in sport,” Jackson said. 

Also involved in the forum’s development this year, Jackson has worked with the ACT Government in Sport and Recreation for the last three and a half months. 

Jackson was quick to recognise the support she had received from the Canberran community whilst also hailing the Government’s role in actively trying to push for equity for women on the sporting agenda. 

“Since I have retired and women in sport are starting to get more recognition and support, I have realised how incredibly lucky I was,” she said.  

“How incredibly forward thinking and ahead of the times Canberra, and the local community were in embracing me and the Canberra Capitals giving me the opportunity they did, and are still giving me today.”
