Round 13 Preview: UC Capitals return home to take on Townsville

January 29, 2024 | UC Capitals news

Back from their six-day road trip, the UC Capitals have returned to their home court as they prepare to take on ladder leaders the Townsville Fire.

This is the Caps third game of Period Poverty Round, after going down to the Bendigo Spirit and Adelaide Lightning on the road.

Alex Sharp was the standout for Canberra, totaling 40 points and 20 rebounds across the two games, and says the team is already learning and looking ahead from the losses.

“Moving into the next game it’s really making a conscious effort to make those adjustments from the last few games and brining each other out of it when we lose focus,” Sharp said.

The Fire’s first game of Round 13 was postponed after Townsville Airport was closed due to Cyclone Kirrily.

Prior to that, in their last game they were handed their fifth loss of the season after a shock 15-point defeat to the Lightning.

Courtney Woods top scored for the Queenslanders contributing 20 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists, followed by Mikaela Ruef with 15 points, 9 rebounds and 2 assists.

This will be the last Cygnett WNBL game before the league breaks for the FIBA window and the Australian Opals head to Brazil for the Olympic Qualifiers.

Caps co-captain, Jade Melbourne, is part of the team headed to South America where a top three finish in their pool will get them a ticket to the Paris Olympics in July.

After a big week away, the Caps are excited to finish the round on their home court in front of a Canberra crowd. Head coach, Kristen Veal, says she’s impressed with the team’s resilience across the season.

“I’ve said it before how proud and how inspired and how great I think this group are, both now and for the future. We’re also still young and still learning and growing about how to whether tough games and tough seasons and things that don’t go our way,” Veal said.
