UC Capitals suffer on road trip
The UC Capitals have fallen in the second half of their round six battle, going down to Perth Lynx, 85-67.
The UC Capitals showed plenty of spirit winning the first quarter, 16-24 with American import Jordan Hooper securing 8 points in the first seven minutes of play. Lauren Scherf added to her teams’ enthusiastic energy, leading with four rebounds along with Abbey Wehrung’s attacking nature hitting the net.
The second quarter pushed the UC Capitals momentum to an all-time high, with the bench getting the job done, out-scoring the home side 19-4 with Ezi Magbegor’s seven-point spell. The UC Caps extended their lead into the break, 38-40.
The UC Capitals began the second half on the back foot as Perth began the third quarter with fast-paced attack and strategic plays. The girls’ endurance began to fade away, going down, 59-54 into the final term.
The last quarter saw the UC Capitals unable to out-shine Perth’s Courtney Williams who managed to single-handily wrap up the match, shooting 6/6 from the floor to collect 12 points in the final 10 minutes.
Head coach Paul Goriss commended his team’s first half performance but says they need to find the value of consistent play.
“I think this was some of the best basketball we played this season going into half-time,” Goriss said.
“We had good control for all of the game even though it was tight and defensively we were really good in that first half of the game.”
“For us now it’s learning about consistency with a new group…it’s just finding a way having habits of winning.”
The UC Capitals now sit at 2-10, and hit the road again this weekend when they travel south to take on third placed Melbourne Boomers this Saturday afternoon.
