It is with great pleasure that the UC Capitals can announce that Jade Melbourne has committed to the Caps for a further two seasons, on the eve of the team’s last game of the season.

The Opals young gun has had a standout season for the Caps in the 2022/23 Cygnett WNBL season, recording 239 points, 104 rebounds, 107 assists and 31 steals, with one game of the regular season remaining.

“I’m super excited to be signing on with the Caps for another two seasons,” she said.

“Canberra has become home for me and there’s nowhere else I’d rather be next season than in a Caps uniform.”

The signing adds further stability for the 20-year-old, who has recently also signed a three-year rookie deal with the Seattle Storm in the WNBA, which will see her spend half the year in the U.S, and half the year in Australia.

“The people I’ve met here, my teammates, coaches and the fans are what make this place great, so I couldn’t be happier with my decision to stay on.”

As part of the leadership group this season alongside Alex Bunton and Britt Smart, Jade epitomises what it is to be a Cap on and off court, displaying leadership, maturity, and a relentless work ethic.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be working with Jade over the next 2-years,” Head Coach Kristen Veal said.

“Jade has been the pulse of our season and has an incredible ability to draw her team, the league and our community in.  To help her build on an amazing WNBL season and her first WNBA opportunity will make for a fun and rewarding couple of seasons.  Jade is a key piece to our evolution and her signing before free-agency speaks to her commitment and belief in the UC Caps organisation and our fans.”

Jade and the UC Capitals will play their final game of the season at the National Convention Centre Canberra, this Saturday, up against the Perth Lynx. Tickets can be purchased here.
