UC Caps suffer heartbreaking loss in Wilson farewell

The University of Canberra Capitals finals hopes were dashed in a two point loss against the Adelaide Lightning in Carly Wilson’s farewell game at Southern Cross Stadium. In a game that came right down to the wire, the UC Caps were unable to send the game into overtime with their last possession, going down 74 to 76. It was a slow start to the game for the home side, often struggling to make the most of their opportunities against a strong Adelaide defence, while the Lightning also hurt them on the attack. After the first quarter it was clear that the UC Capitals were beginning to find some rhythm, outscoring Adelaide in every other quarter. However, despite their progression it wasn’t enough to seal the victory. Lauren Mansfield’s last quarter was outstanding for the UC Caps. In a game filled with so much tension and anticipation, she stayed calm under the pressure and sunk to clutch three pointers in pivotal moments of the game. Jazmon Gwathemy too played an outstanding game. She was the UC Capitals leading point scorer with 16 and also picked up four rebounds, an assist and a steal. However, Adelaide’s Colleen Planeta was the player of the game with a game high 29 points, four rebounds, three assists and two blocks. She also scored the game winner three point shot when scores were tied with a minute to go. The UC Capitals will finish their season on Saturday night when they take on the Fire in Townsville.
