The Podcast Snack with Brianna Turner

Fresh from producing a stellar debut season, Adelaide Lightning import Brianna Turner has won the Chemist Warehouse WNBL Show Player of the Year award.

The 23-year-old forward averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds in her maiden WNBL campaign, playing an influential role for the Lightning in securing a finals berth.

Turner scored in double figures in 17 of a possible 21 games and registered 9 double-doubles.

She joins elite company and previous winners of the award in UC Capitals superstar Kelsey Griffin (2018-19) and Liz Cambage (2017-18).

Turner accepted her accolade on this week’s Chemist Warehouse WNBL Show.

“This league is filled with such great players so it’s a great honour,’’ she said.

“Coming into the season I wanted to work on my consistency. Playing in a new league and a new team I just wanted to make sure I absorbed it all. I’ve enjoyed playing in the WNBL, there’s just so much competition – every weekend we know it’s going to be a challenge.

“I felt like the first couple of rounds I was trying to find my feet and like you said it’s different officiating, different players, a different style but I felt like by the third week I kind of got my flow a little and understood the game here better.”

Being part of the Lightning line-up, coached by Chris Lucas, has been an enjoyable experience.

“Definitely. I mean this team is amazing from the more experienced players like Nat (Hurst) and Laura (Hodges) to our starters like Lauren Nicholson, Steph Talbot and Nicole Seekamp,’’ Turner said.

“It’s just been so awesome playing with them and learning from them.”

Following the FIBA Olympic Qualifiers, Turner and the Lightning will be in action in Game 1 of the semi-final series against the Southside Flyers at Dandenong Stadium on Tuesday February 18.
