UC CAPITALS AND RANGERS TO HOST INDIGENOUS ROUNDS THIS WEEKEND

Round 10 will feature two Chemist Warehouse WNBL teams hosting Indigenous rounds, with the UC Capitals commemorating the occasion for the first time in the club’s 34-year history.

The UC Capitals will wear an Indigenous uniform based on the University of Canberra’s Indigenous design developed earlier this year from a collaboration with UC Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Leadership and Strategy and Aboriginal artists.

Earlier this week, the team ran a clinic with the Winnunga Warriors Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Basketball Club as the UC Capitals put them through a series of drills before playing off against the Warriors.

A reincarnation of The Shadows, the club established by Patty Mills’ parents, Yvonne and Benny Mills, the Warriors promote diversity by encouraging people of different backgrounds to play together.

On Sunday at 3pm when the UC Capitals host the Perth Lynx, they will be running a game-day auction for jerseys with all proceeds going to an indigenous NGO.

The round will hold a special significance for UC Caps’ players Abby Cubillo and Leilani Mitchell who are both of Indigenous heritage and former Capitals’ player Katie Rose spoke about the significance of the event.

At Dandenong Stadium, the Rangers will be hosting an indigenous round of their own on Sunday at 3pm as well when they take on the Bendigo Bank Spirit.

The Rangers will celebrate the traditional owners of this land with the special occasion, commemorating the round with special Indigenous uniforms.

Dandenong Stadium will also play host to the Apunipima Australian Indigenous Basketball Team Women’s National Team try-outs on Saturday and Sunday. The try-outs will provide young indigenous people the chance to learn off elite coaches while trying out for the squad.
