Chemist Warehouse WNBL 40th anniversary TV commercial
A new television commercial celebrates and highlights 40 fabulous years of the Chemist Warehouse WNBL.
Voiced by WNBL and Australian basketball legend Lauren Jackson, the video takes a walk down memory lane on the eve of the competition’s four-decade milestone with a look at a who’s-who of league stars, iconic moments and incredible fans.
Jackson, who today is Basketball Australia’s Head of Women in Basketball, says the commercial is a fitting tribute.
“This wonderful ad highlights the WNBL’s longevity as the oldest elite women’s sporting competition in Australia and the incredible trail we have blazed for women’s basketball and women in sport in general.
“It was special watching it for the first time, it took me back to different historical moments throughout the league and our iconic athletes.”
UC Capitals star Kelsey Griffin took all before her last season taking out the WNBL’s most valuable player award and was crowned Grand Final MVP in her side’s 2-1 championship-series win over the Adelaide Lightning.
Griffin described the milestone as remarkable.
“I think about the infinite amount of people and volunteers who made this league happen. The WNBL has come on in leaps and bounds even in the short time I’ve been involved as a player. When I began at the Bendigo Spirit there were two-full time players, now the league has a minimum wage and we have rights with our bodies thanks to the pregnancy and parental policy. We have accomplished a lot,” she says.
“I feel very fortunate to be part of the WNBL and I’m grateful for the players that came before me who paved the way.”
The TVC debuted in front of a full house at Marvel Stadium last month when the Australian Boomers hosted USA Basketball.
The Chemist Warehouse WNBL season will be launched in Canberra this Wednesday.
#WNBL20 Round 1 tips off on Friday October 11 when the Adelaide Lightning host the Sydney Uni Flames.
