Boomers Ready For Season Full Of Blockbusters

August 21, 2018 | Melbourne Boomers news

The Deakin Melbourne Boomers are set for a number of sell-outs this season following the release of a schedule packed with big games.

“It’s an action-packed schedule. Seats are selling fast, we have flown past last year’s membership numbers and strongly encourage everyone to grab a membership to make sure they have the best seats. It’s going to be a fun season,” said Boomers GM, Justin Nelson.

Melbourne’s WNBL team will open the season with a ‘City vs County’ feel when Bendigo Spirit heads to the State Basketball Centre (SBC) for a Saturday night showdown on October 13. From there, the Boomers will move to the Geelong Arena where they will welcome Canberra on Friday October 19.

The WNBL’s biggest date on the calendar (Melbourne Cup Eve) will once again have all eyes on the Boomers when Bendigo returns to SBC for their first ever crack at Melbourne in a Cup Eve Derby.

During a big week for the Boomers where they will play four games in eight days, a Thursday night showdown on November 8 against Sydney will be focused on grassroots basketball with all junior players admitted for free if they wear their local club’s colours.

Other notable games on the calendar include a Grand Final re-match with Townsville on Sunday November 18 for the Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision (MRV) Purple Power game, while the very popular Dads & Daughters Day will be played on Saturday December 1 with Monique Conti and her Dad, Sam, featuring as the ambassadors of the day.

A new theme for the Boomers will come a week later on Saturday December 8 when the first ever Girls Day Out will feature a call to Mums, Daughters, Grandmas, Aunties, Nieces, Girlfriends and Teammates to come along and experience an afternoon with Australia’s longest-running elite-level women’s sports team.

“We want to celebrate women in sport and importantly, women in our community. This game, Girls Day Out, is a chance for all the girls and women in the community to come and enjoy an afternoon together at a Boomers game. We hope to see a lot of first time fans, and of course the boys and men are most welcome as well,” said Nelson.

Excitingly, a new derby night has been put on the schedule when the Boomers will host the first ever Christmas Derby featuring a showdown with Dandenong on Sunday December 23 at 5pm.

“It’s the perfect way to get a huge dose of fierce basketball in a Melbourne rivalry before Christmas Day. We wanted to start a new derby initiative on the eve of Christmas and we could think of no better way to start it than with a showdown against the Rangers. It should be fun,” added Nelson.
