Game preview: Boomers and Lightning

December 30, 2021 | Melbourne Boomers news

The Deakin Melbourne Boomers take on the Adelaide Lightning tonight, at The Lights Community and Sports Centre in Adelaide.

The big question is if the Boomers can continue their momentum and run of wins (the last 4 from 5 games) off the back of the Christmas break, on Adelaide’s home court.

Adelaide are only two games into their season (one win, one loss), most recently going head-to-head with the UC Capitals and coming away with a convincing 26-point victory.

Marena Whittle lead Adelaide’s scoring, with 17 points. Steph Talbot, Ezi’s Seattle Storm (WNBA) teammate, also made an impact with 12 rebounds and six assists.

The Lightning offer a different line up compared to other teams the Boomers have come up against so far this season. They possess great shooting ability on both the perimeter and free throw line (last game managing 95% free throws), and plenty of players with the ability to stretch the floor.

To be a threat, the Boomers will need to will need to stay sharp.  Offensively, it will be business as usual, looking to build on finding looks and getting to the foul line.

The Lightning may have the fresher legs over the Boomers overall, but at slightly more risk of still finding their rhythm against the various styles of play in the league.

Meanwhile, we may hold the advantage having had longer to gel as a team, but time will tell how the marathon run of games pre-Christmas will impact how we pull up tonight.

Fans can expect a fierce, physical, and athletic game from these two teams.
