It has been an exciting time for the Chemist Warehouse WNBL clubs, with the Free Agency period bringing some exciting announcements. As the period continues, we are keeping you up-to-date with a tailored bi-monthly summary.

Adelaide Lightning

The Adelaide Lightning have struck again, this time with superstar Marena Whittle. The 26-year old guard joins the Lightning in her fourth WNBL season, after playing with the Townsville Fire, Bendigo Spirit and most recently on the Perth Lynx roster in the #WNBL20 season.

Bendigo Spirit

There’s something about Mary… The Spirit have signed WNBL debut Mary Goulding. The New York Fordham University Graduate and recently named New Zealand Tall Fern, is the sixth name on the Bendigo roster for the upcoming season. We look forward to seeing what Goulding will bring to the League. Also joining the Spirit is Shelby Britten after spending the #WNBL20 season in the extended Spirit training squad. Britten will take one of the full roster spots for the Spirit for the upcoming season.

Deakin Melbourne Boomers

The Deakin Melbourne Boomers didn’t waste any time. A weekend treat the Melbourne Boomers have announced the re-signing of Penina Davidson. The New Zealand native will return for her second season with the Boomers. Davidson also plays in the New Zealand National Women’s team, the Tall Ferns, and had an exceptional playing career at College in the US with the Golden Bears. Also staying with the Boomers is fellow New Zealand native and Tall Ferns star, Stella Beck. After an exceptional season where Beck stepped up as starting point guard for the Boomers in the second half of the #WNBL20 season, in the injury absence of Lindsay Allen, Beck returns to the Melbourne located team for her second season with the Boomers.

Jayco Southside Flyers

A massive week from the Flyers saw the club retain two of their #WNBL20 playing squad, Rebecca Cole and Sara Blicavs. Shooting guard Cole was named in the WNBL All-Star Second team for her #WNBL20 campaign and also represented Australia in the 2019 3×3 Basketball World Cup. Blicavs, a current member of the Chemist Warehouse Australian Opals squad had a stellar #WNBL20 campaign with the Flyers and aims to do one better this upcoming season, hungry for the Championship title.

JCU Townsville Fire

There’s no stopping the Townsville Fire who have been dropping big names on their roster week after week. Steph Reid kicked off the week with announcing her signing to the club. Reid is no stranger to the League having spent the past two seasons under the Southside Flyers/Dandenong Rangers program. Reid is joined by WNBL veteran, Lara McSpadden. The 193cm centre will make the move to the Fire, after spending four years under the Sydney Uni Flames program.

Perth Lynx

This week the Lynx welcomed back Neseya Parker-Williams, and are excited to see her make her mark this season in the League. Parker-Williams starred for the Apunipima Australian Indigenous Basketball All Stars Women’s at the 2019 International Indigenous and Cultural Basketball Tournament and has proved herself to be a versatile player on the court. Moving to the west is Adelaide Lightning’s Jessie Edwards. Edwards was named the West Coast Waves Rookie of the Year in 2013/14, before moving to the University of Minnesota. Parker-Williams and Edwards will join a long list of players that have already been announced.

Bryden’s Sydney Uni Flames

The Flames have announced this week the signing of the young-gun guard, Funda Nakkasoglu. Nakkasoglu has recently played her first year as a professional basketballer for Galatasaray S.K. in the Turkish Women’s Basketball League. Joining Nakkasoglu is Jayco Southside Flyer, Kiera Rowe. Rowe is making the move to the Flames after spending a year with the grand final runner-ups.
