Flyers Round 6 Wrap-Up
Back on court after a break in the Chemist Warehouse WNBL, the Jayco Southside Flyers boosted their season record to 7-1 with a mighty weekend win.
The Flyers flocked north to take on the JCU Townsville Fire on Saturday night and returned home to Victoria the following day with an emphatic 91-59 victory.

Southside got off to a flyer at Townsville Stadium by sinking a sensational 30 first-quarter points and the demolition job continued across the next three terms as we restricted the home side to just 30 per cent shooting for the game.
Coach Cheryl Chambers said after losing to the UC Capitals in Round 5 her ladder-leading side had some boxes to tick at the weekend.
“We had everyone going for boards because Canberra schooled us on the rebounds so it was a real focus and an area we want to get better at and it was exciting to see the girls cheering every time we got a rebound,’’ she said.
“We come up against two more good teams this weekend so we’ve got to keep working on our defense.”
As has become a healthy habit so far this season, all five Flyers starters scored in double digits: Jenna O’Hea (21 points and 7 assists), Bec Cole (20 points), Mercedes Russell (17 points, 9 rebounds), Leilani Mitchell (13 points, 8 assists) and Sara Blicavs (13 rebounds, 12 points).
In another positive sign, Anneli Maley came off the bench and hauled in 7 boards.
The Flyers take off on a big Round 7 road trip this weekend with games against the Perth Lynx (5th) on Friday night then Adelaide (4th).
“We’re looking forward to it. Perth play such a quick style of game so you can’t be napping against them. They’ve come off some hard road travel so they’ll be happy to have a game at home,’’ Chambers said.
“Adelaide will have their new import this weekend and that’s what we want, we want to play teams at their best and see where we’re at.
“It’ll be exciting for us.”
