FLYERS WELCOME ABBY BISHOP
The Flyers welcome the 2015 WNBL Most Valuable Player, and dual WNBL All-Star player, Abby Bishop, to the team for the upcoming season.
A forward/centre, Bishop has enjoyed a wonderful basketball career which includes an Olympic bronze medal with the Opals, a WNBA Championship with Seattle Storm and success at several European teams as well as in the WNBL. Her WNBL career includes seasons with Canberra, Adelaide and Townsville as well as the 2010-11 season with Dandenong Rangers.
“I am very grateful to Cheryl for giving me the opportunity to join the Flyers, the success Southside has enjoyed in just two seasons shows the high standards the team sets and is why I am excited by the opportunity,” Bishop said.
“I have been very fortunate to have enjoyed an amazing career and am determined to add to the success with the Flyers,” added Bishop.
With her international experience, Abby will not only be a strong presence on the court, she will also be an important leader.
“We are delighted Abby has joined the team for the upcoming season. She brings wonderful basketball IQ, is a real power player with international experience that will benefit everyone in the team,” Flyers Coach Cheryl Chambers said.
“She has a real presence on the court, knows the league, knows what is required and I am really looking forward to having her on our team,” Cheryl added.
Bishop was born in Booleroo in the southern Flinders Ranges region of South Australia and commenced her WNBL career with the AIS and then the Canberra Capitals before joining the Seattle Storm. As well as an outstanding WNBL and Australian representative career, Bishop has also played in France and Hungary and last season played with Virtus Bologna in Italy.
She recently moved to Melbourne to commence training with the Flyers, moving from Queensland where she had been playing for Ipswich Force in NBL1.
The 2021-22 WNBL season fixture is expected to be released later this month and Flyers Membership will be launched following the release of the fixture. With a limit on crowd numbers members will receive priority to attend all home games.
