Know Your Flyers – Abby Bishop

December 2, 2021 | Southside Flyers news

Ruby Harkness, a member of the Flyers support team, looks at some of our key players for the 2021/22 WNBL season as we look to defend last season’s championship!

Olympian (bronze medallist), WNBA Champion, 3-time WNBL Champion, and 2015 WNBL MVP, Abby Bishop is ready to make an impact on court with the Flyers this season. After an off-season playing in Italy for Virtus Bologna and in the NBL1 North for Ipswich, Bishop is settling into Melbourne after a great experience overseas.

At forward/centre, her international resume and history of winning will fit right into the Flyers culture. A 2x WNBL All Star Five, Bishop also played with the Dandenong Rangers in 2010-2011, ensuring our home court at Dandenong is familiar territory.

Bishop will be playing with former Olympic team-mate, Rachel Jarry, for the first time since wearing the green and gold in 2012. The duo will be great to watch on court. Flyers Captain, Jenna O’Hea was part of the bronze medal winning Opals in London, together with Flyers Assistant Coach, Belinda Snell.

Abby is a Mum to her 8-year old niece, Zala, who has friends all over the world thanks to her Mums inspiring overseas basketball career and has quickly become a favourite around the Flyers.

Bishop was born in Booleroo in the southern Flinders Ranges region of South Australia and commenced her WNBL career with the AIS and then the Canberra Capitals before joining the Seattle Storm. As well as an outstanding WNBL and Australian representative career, Bishop has also played in France and Hungary as well as in Italy last season.
