Alex Bunton Returns to Basketball with UC Caps
The University of Canberra Capitals are incredibly proud to announce Alex Bunton’s return to basketball and the UC Capitals. Alex Bunton first played for the Capitals back in 2012, she played professionally in Russia and has represented Australia as an Opal. Alex was exceptionally brave and showed unparalleled toughness while recovering from many injuries during her career but 11 knee surgeries later she decided to make the even more painful decision to leave the basketball court. This upcoming Chemist Warehouse WNBL season we will see a revitalised Alex Bunton keen to get back to the game she loves.
“The opportunity to return to basketball this year was something I couldn’t turn down. After a long two years and a baby in between, I have never felt better mentally and physically!”
Coach Paul Goriss was instrumental in getting her back with the UC Caps.
“We are thrilled to welcome Alex Bunton back to the Caps. Alex retired early from basketball due to ongoing knee issues but after the birth of her daughter Opal, Alex has been working hard and I reached out to see if she would be interested in a return to the WNBL with the Caps.”
Paul and Alex have discussed the strategy around keeping her healthy and managing her return correctly.
“We have spoken at length about the expectations on her return and how we best manage her minutes and body and I think it’s very exciting to have Alex back playing basketball at a high level. We all know how tough, strong and competitive Alex is and her work ethic will fit in great with our team, she is in terrific shape and will bring size, toughness and a physical presence at both ends of the court.”
Alex is thrilled to return to where it all began for her.
“Returning to where I started at the UC Caps is something special. I’m so excited for this new and familiar journey I’m going on with my beautiful daughter Opal. It’s going to be one of the greatest challenges of my life. I’m so grateful to the Caps for contacting me and for my family for supporting me.”
