CANCELLATION ANNOUNCEMENT: Rd 12 UC Capitals v Perth Lynx
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ROUND 12 UC CAPITALS V PERTH LYNX GAME CANCELLED DUE TO POOR AIR QUALITY
The Chemist Warehouse WNBL has made the decision to cancel the Round 12 UC Capitals v Perth Lynx game, due to be played on Sunday 5 January at 2:00pm local time at the AIS Arena.
The game has been cancelled due to heavy smoke, caused from the NSW bushfires, impacting the air quality inside the venue.
The decision was made Friday morning, after consultation with AIS Arena and club officials, with consideration of the ACT’s public health warnings.
The ACT Health Directorate stated that there has been a deterioration of air quality across Canberra from the heavy smoke and that conditions may also be intensified by the hot temperatures forecast. They have advised people to avoid physical activity outside and for those who are particularly sensitive to smoke to take extra care.
Further discussions between the WNBL and respective teams will determine a solution on the most fair and equitable date to replay the game if both the teams and the league feel it necessary. Once a decision has been reached, members, fans and media will be notified via the appropriate channels.
Head of Women in Basketball, Lauren Jackson said the decision was made in the best interest of the fans, players and officials.
“We understand that it is disappointing to have had to cancel the game, but after multiple discussions with both clubs and the league, the decision was the most appropriate and safest course of action,” Jackson said.
Lucille Bailie, General Manager of the UC Capitals, said the team was looking forward to playing at AIS Arena again, but the safety of the players and fans comes first.
“The smoke covering Canberra has been severe and knowing the weather conditions are only expected to worsen this weekend, we trust that this is the best decision for everyone,” Bailie said.
“We hope Canberra will be able to enjoy our game against Perth on another date when the air quality has improved, and we look forward to seeing our supporters at our next home game.”
UC Capitals’ members will have access to the rescheduled game via their membership cards as per normal. Members will be contacted with more information via the UC Capitals Member Newsletter or the Members Facebook Group.
Ticket holders who purchased tickets online will automatically be refunded within 14 days. Those who purchased through an agency will be contacted directly by Ticketek.
