UC Capitals Round 9 review

December 6, 2017 | UC Capitals news

Round 9 of the 2017/18 WNBL season began at Bendat Basketball Centre, with the University of Canberra Capitals going down in a nail-bitting defeat against Perth Lynx, 89-76.

The fixture marked UC Capitals forward Lauren Scherf’s 100th WNBL match, but her admirable milestone wasn’t enough for the visitors to snap their mid-season slump.

The first quarter provided plenty of excitement as Jordan Hooper stole the show with 9 points as the UC Capitals went into the second quarter, 19-27.

The UC Capitals continued to extend their lead heading into the half-time break as Vice-Captain Kate Gaze providing a breathtaking three pointer early on in the second quarter. The UC Capitals continued to dominate the court leading at the break, 39-51.

On her return game, Rachel Jarry provided leadership and skill in the third quarter to keep the game rolling as Perth Lynx began their fight back.

However, the UC Capitals went into the final quarter tied on 69 points, but unfortunately only scored seven points in the final ten minutes as they fell to Perth Lynx, 89-76.

Jordan Hooper led the way for the UC Capitals with 20 points while Abbey Wehrung managed an admirable 13 points despite battling an ankle injury.

In match two of their monster road trip, the UC Capitals faced Melbourne Boomers with returning Mistie Bass unable to provide the much-needed spark as the UC Capitals fell short, 92-72.

The UC Capitals struggled in the opening ten minutes, scoring just six points in the first quarter and shooting just 15 percent for the first half.

However, the second half provided inspiration for Captain and point guard Nat Hurst, showing why she is selected in the Australian Opals squad with 15 of her 21 points scored in the second half.

Jordan Hooper was a standout for the away team in the third quarter as she scored two late triples ahead of the final ten minutes. The UC Capitals went into the final term behind by 16 points.

The Melbourne Boomers proved to be too strong in the fourth quarter, stretching out their early lead to win the match, 92-72.
